Osoro Codes

An Osoro Code is the address book pointed the other way round. The gazetteer makes our deliveries cheaper; a code is the same confirmed doorway handed to the person who lives there, to give to anybody who wants to send them something. The sender types eight characters instead of describing a gate, and learns nothing about where it is — they are told a neighbourhood and nothing else.

A code is earned, never assigned: two deliveries a rider confirmed at the door. That is what makes it worth trusting, and it is why the number of people who could have one is the number on this page worth watching.

Earned it, has not got one

Doors confirmed twice or more with no live code. The drain issues these on every pass; the button is for when somebody is on the phone asking now.

Codes in the world

Every code this operation has issued. Drift is how far the door has moved since the code was cut — deliveries keep teaching the pin, and past fifty metres somebody should look before a rider is sent to the old one. Refresh moves the code onto what the deliveries now say; rotate gives the same door a new handle, for a code that got onto a WhatsApp group.

What a sender sees

Type a code the way a customer would say it — spaces, dashes and lower case are all the same code. This is the whole of what comes back to whoever types it: a neighbourhood, and whether it is in use. No coordinate, no name, no phone number, and the same refusal for a code that never existed, one that is paused and one that was revoked — anything else would let a stranger ask whether somebody still lives here.
